The genus Tenodera contains some of the largest and most familiar mantises in the world, and a member of this genus was one of the first insects to greet me on the Rinjani trail.
These are robust predators, often exceeding 10 centimeters, usually green or brown for camouflage. Look for the black-banded spot on the inner forecoxae and the elongated pronotum: together they are the genus’s identification card.
Most species are fully winged, with males being the stronger fliers. Native to Asia, some species, such as the Chinese mantis Tenodera sinensis, have become widely introduced predators around the globe. On the mountain, this one simply sat and waited, as mantises have done for a hundred million years.
