Two dots. That is all it takes to recognize Gryllus bimaculatus, the two-spotted cricket, one of the most familiar crickets in the world (family Gryllidae, subfamily Gryllinae).
It has also been called the African or Mediterranean field cricket, but its recorded range stretches much further, through much of Asia, China and Indochina all the way to Borneo. The two dot-like marks at the base of the wings separate it from other Gryllus species at a glance.
It is also one of the most useful crickets in captivity: widely bred as feeder food for insectivorous pets, easy to raise, and with no need for a winter chill to complete its life cycle. On Rinjani, it was simply another voice in the nightly chorus.
