Not every insect on a mountain has a well-known story. Eucoptaspis is a genus of katydids (family Tettigoniidae) that most field guides barely mention, which is exactly what makes finding one exciting.
Described by Willemse in 1966, the genus is part of the vast katydid radiation of Southeast Asia, where new species are still being described on a regular basis. The individual photographed on Mount Rinjani was a quiet, well-camouflaged member of this understudied group.
Sometimes the best finds are the ones you have to go home and look up.
