Some crickets are easy to name. The members of the subfamily Podoscirtinae are not. They belong to the family Oecanthidae, a group that was only restored in 2022 based on the type genus Oecanthus (Serville, 1831).
The family includes tree crickets, anomalous crickets and bush crickets, and it is found in the warmer parts of most of the world. Their taxonomy is still settling, which makes every encounter a small research question.
At night on Rinjani, their calls filled the undergrowth, a reminder that cricket classification is very much a work in progress.
