Few katydids announce themselves as boldly as Mecopoda elongata. At 50 to 75 millimeters to the wing tips, it is one of the larger members of the family Tettigoniidae, and it is famous for a calling song that can carry across a whole forest clearing.
The body comes in brown or green, with yellowish-brown tones on the top of the head, the sides of the pronotum, and the folded forewings. Its slender antennae are made of many segments and extend well past the wing tips, often with dark spots scattered along them.
