A dark jewel met on a summer road in Medog.
On 28 June 2026, in the hills of Gelin Village, Beibeng Township, Medog County, Nyingchi, Tibet, I came across this compact scarab. It held still on a pale surface at the roadside, letting me get close enough for a few careful frames before it was gone.

The beetle is a flower chafer of the genus Heterorhina (family Scarabaeidae, subfamily Cetoniinae, tribe Goliathini). The identification currently stands at genus level and is awaiting community confirmation for the exact species. The genus name Heterorhina was established by Westwood in 1842, and its members are best known from tropical Asia.
In the photos the beetle shows a dark, stocky body: a broad pronotum, smooth and slightly glossy elytra that cover the abdomen, and sturdy legs typical of a chafer. Cetoniine adults are strong fliers, regularly drawn to flowers, sap, and ripe fruit, while their larvae develop in decaying wood and organic matter. Medog sits at the eastern end of the Himalaya, a pocket of wet forest famous for its insect diversity, and a fitting home for a flower chafer.

Flower chafers are sometimes called the jewels of the scarab family, and many relatives shine in metallic green or gold. This one wears a subdued dark coat, a reminder that even inside a glamorous tribe, plenty of species keep things quiet.
