Some predators hunt with speed. The thread-legged bugs hunt with patience, and the genus Gardena is one of the best. A member of the subfamily Emesinae (family Reduviidae), it moves across leaves on legs so thin they seem to belong to a different animal.
Gardena is the second-largest genus in the tribe Emesini, with 46 described species spread across the warmer regions of the world. These are ambush hunters that grasp small prey with their raptorial front legs, then stab it with a short, curved beak.
Watching one stalk across a leaf at night is like watching a math problem walk. Every step is precise, deliberate, and quietly lethal.
